RPGaDay2026 – Edge

The whole point of #RPGaDay2026 this year, for me, was to use the prompts to create a bunch of articles to promote Sanction RPG as a system for newcomers, but also to help those who own it understand what creating their own content involves. The best place to start is at the beginning, with RPGaDay 2026 Begins.

Hackathon

The last four-and-a-bit weeks have been a bit of a hackathon for me, using the prompts to create the germ of an idea and then expanding from there.

If you want to create your own Genre Setup, I would first strongly suggest you have a read through some of those that exist already—facilitated by a well discounted Bundle for around $20 on DriveThruRPG.

If you read through a Genre Setup, or one of the collections of articles over the last month, you can see that the basic setup is:

  • A collection of thematic Resources, or just use Physical, Mental and Willpower
  • A trio of Lifepath tables, covering Purpose, Struggle, and Influence, around which you scatter Abilities, so that a Player ends up with eight to choose their three from
  • One or more Game Mechanics suited to emphasizing the atmosphere and themes of your Genre Set

For the last, look to Tact, Loss and Strain, as well as Burn in The Agency, Unravelling in The Dee Sanction, or Pressure in Lost in The Fold. Indeed, many of the Genres laid out in the last few weeks have had mechanics of their own to track elements that enhance and enrich the flavour of the setting.

I think the Edge that Sanction possesses is simplicity and flexibility. New mechanics or Genres do not change the way you resolve Challenges or how the Lifepath provides the Abilities that offer spotlight time to everyone. Characters are generated to have their own unique aspects and add their specific Abilities, expertise and talents into the pool.

The simplicity of a character and their essential elements has meant that BlueSky (and other platforms before it) has had a random character generator—Mister Garland—for The Dee Sanction churning out Agents of Dee for ages. There are 1,000 combinations available from three 1d10 Lifepath tables with many more combinations available for the Abilities you choose.

That said, as detailed in Sanction, the .GIF Genre Setup has fewer options but remains flexible enough to provide an array of combinations. You don’t need to spend too long scattering unique options and Abilities around to get going.

In the meantime, you can find more options and Adventures scattered across my needlessly varied blogs—at boreders, Glowing Monkeys, and The Dee Sanction.

Compendium

I can’t make any guarantees about the timeframes, but I would like to focus on creating content popular with those invested in the project. If you play, or would like to play, Sanction and want to see a Genre Setup from #RPGaDay2026 in the future, make a selection in the Poll, below.

The ideal would be to have them all included in a Sanction Compendium, but that’s a lot more work than bringing together a single Genre Setup as a 20-30 page booklet. We’ll see.

How has RPGaDay 2026 been for you? I look forward to reading about it in your RPGaDay post.
