RPGaDay2026 – Labour
QkSLVa works best when victory has an aftertaste. Without belabouring the point—because we’re not here to preach—there’s something to be appreciated that the monsters here are suffering, too, because humanity overstepped the mark.
The Characters have extraordinary power available whenever they decide the situation warrants the cost. We’ve outlined how this makes Strain an interesting mechanic, as well as a narrative tool. Players will see that becoming monstrous isn’t something that merely happens to others. And giving in to the monster will often occur at the toughest possible moments.
Adventures will tend to orbit the contention generated by humanity and monstrous alike in collide pursuing basic survival. More often than not, the outcome will necessitate tough decisions and both sides losing in some measure.

Mission Critical
A QkSLVa adventure isn’t simply, “There is a monster. Kill it.“
The Silver Team is there to ask the interesting questions, like why the monster is there, what environmental or human disaster drove it into the open, who benefits from its removal, and what happens if the squad discovers that extermination isn’t the obvious solution.
The following use the Task At Hand / What’s Going On / Twist structure that I fell in love with when I started writing The Dee Sanction and I can’t quite shake off.
1. Rain Dogs
Task At Hand: A series of killings has emptied a temporary settlement beside a newly constructed flood barrier. Locate and eliminate the were-pack responsible before another storm forces thousands more evacuees into the site.
What’s Going On: Industrial silver compounds concentrated by repeated flooding have poisoned the pack’s traditional territory. The surviving lycanthropes have moved into the settlement because filtered drinking water makes it the only place they aren’t slowly dying.
Twist: They aren’t responsible for the killings. The pharmaceutical contractor maintaining the water system has been murdering residents who discovered it was illegally testing QkSLVa precursors through the filtration network.
2. Daylight Saving
Task At Hand: Track a vampire responsible for three deaths inside an underground shopping complex being used as an emergency cooling centre.
What’s Going On: Record-breaking UV levels have made surface travel impossible for the creature. It’s trapped underground with several thousand humans and getting hungrier.
Twist: The deaths weren’t feeding. The vampire killed three infected humans whose blood carried an experimental pathogen. It knows something is spreading through the shelter and has been trying to contain it. After early interaction with the team, the vampire will plead its case and subvert the mission parameters, for personal and the wider good.
3. Bitter Harvest
Task At Hand: A farming cooperative has stopped responding after reporting mutilated livestock and impossible figures moving through drought-stricken fields.
What’s Going On: Something old has awakened beneath peat exposed by falling groundwater. It isn’t attacking the farmers. It’s rebuilding an ecosystem that disappeared centuries ago.
Twist: Destroying it saves the community but eliminates the only organism anyone has found capable of restoring the poisoned soil.
4. Patient Zero
Task At Hand: Escort a research team into a condemned metropolitan hospital and retrieve stored tissue samples before structural failure makes the building inaccessible.
What’s Going On: The hospital treated some of the first publicly documented supernatural casualties. The basement archive contains tissue from both humans and monsters, potentially enough to manufacture a safer generation of QkSLVa.
Twist: The samples prove the corporation already knew that repeated serum use caused transformation before the current squads were recruited. Your employer wants everything destroyed.
5. The Longest Mile
Task At Hand: Find a missing convoy carrying enough QkSLVa to supply regional operations for six months.
What’s Going On: The convoy was attacked, but not by monsters. A civilian militia stole the serum after their isolated town was abandoned by government emergency services. They’ve started dosing themselves.
Twist: It works. The town is safe. But, they have also accumulated enough collective Strain that the Squad isn’t facing a monster outbreak yet. They’re facing one in about twenty minutes.
6. Extinction Event
Task At Hand: Eliminate what intelligence describes as the largest vampire colony ever identified, sheltering inside an abandoned subterranean military facility.
What’s Going On: There are hundreds of them, but most are ancient, sick and starving. The facility isn’t a fortress. It’s a hospice.
Twist: The colony possesses centuries of ecological records. Their observations document climate, disease, migration and environmental change with a continuity no human archive can match. Your employer wants the vampires dead, and then it can access the archive. It’ll be better for everyone, obviously.
What labour of love have you engaged in with your past characters? I look forward to reading about it in your RPGaDay post.
