RPGaDay2026 – Poise

Today, we continue our exploration of Stature and Poise regarding the Players’ exploits under the command of the Master of the Revels. Today’s outline continues with the Lifepath and Abilities, which will allow the players to complete character generation.

From here, the business of exploring The Ovation falls to you, though you can influence future development once we round off the month of entries for #RPGaDay2026.

Lifepath & Abilities

To progress the creation of your character, you will pick—or randomise—three options, one from each of the tables below. These tables cover different facets of your Player and outline a set of Abilities—three on the first and second, plus two on the third. Per Sanction’s standard approach, you can choose three from any of these eight Abilities offered when creating your character; you do not need to select one from each table.

Purpose is the character’s current place within the troupe; the Struggle is the great performance they long to achieve (or escape); and the Influence is the trade for which they trained but were cast aside for some reason, that still colours how they solve problems.

To avoid overlap, each Ability appears only once across the three tables. If you wish to maximise the variety of your troupe, players should take a unique option from each table. You can best achieve this by each taking a playing card from a selection of Ace to 10 and taking the option that matches your card. Otherwise, if you roll or choose options, keep track of the types already selected.

Struggle (d10)

What performance has become your life’s obsession?

Per the title, this is your bane, your weakness, and the thing that leaves you lying awake at night. For whatever reason, you can bring this performance to the stage, and yet you must. Each Struggle notes a possible reason why you have not yet performed it—indeed, why everyone avoids it; but feel free to improvise.

As a player, lean into references to why this play haunts you, not worrying too much about the details of the work itself. Yes, these plays are references to ancient works of the Classics, but you shouldn’t worry too much about versimilitude. Extol upon what troubles you to your heart’s content and your soul’s anguish, until the other Players (and players) plead with you to stop!

Why This Fits Sanction

Like The Dee Sanction, The Ovation presents an Elizabethan organisation working in the shadows, but with a different perspective. Both Dee’s Agents and the actors licensed by the Master of the Revels serve the Queen, but each has a remit that leans into the player characters’ strengths and plays merry havoc with their weaknesses. Rather than spies seeking pardon from past violations of a law that demands punishment by death, the Players are cultural custodians whose weapons are words, movement and collective belief; their theatrical performance is their bread and butter; and the license to perform is all that stands between them and punishment for vagabondry.

While the two games coexist in the same historical period, with the possibility to occasionally cross paths, they do not compete for the same stories. For those familiar with them, this is comparable to The X-Files and Millennium; both series by the same creator and with an obligatory crossover episode, but each following a different path skirting around shadowy organisations and unsettling truths.

Campaigns become investigations wrapped around performances. The company arrives in a town, uncovers a mystery rooted in corrupted folklore or dangerous imitation, and discovers that the scheduled play is not merely entertainment but the key to resolving the crisis. The climax is rarely a conventional battle; instead, the company must complete the performance despite sabotage, possession, missing actors, changing scripts or supernatural interference. The audience must remain convinced that everything unfolding before them is simply part of the show.
