First RPG Gamemaster
Graham, a percussionist in the Beanfield Comprehensive School brass band, presented me with the chance to play a game of red box Basic D&D one lunchtime. So – along with double bass player Jon and cornet player Roy – we played our first adventure seeking out that dastardly wizard Bargle.
In the featured picture for this post, Graham is standing up on the right, directly beneath the glockenspiel (in the backdrop). I’m directly beneath him, playing the bass trombone. Jon is on the double bass at the back, diagonally left of the conductor’s shoulder. Roy is in the middle of the front row of cornet players on the left of the picture.
While Graham was the first GM, we all muddled in and found our way into the hot seat. While Graham kicked off with Basic D&D, he would later run The Enemy Within (Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing), amongst others. Jon would run Call of Cthulhu and FASA Star Trek, while Roy guided us through the many books and adventures of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.
I don’t remember there being much of a learning process, launching into each new game and campaign with relish. I don’t recall us playing endlessly in the same game because we all took our turns in the control seat. It might be the genesis of my wandering relationship with roleplaying games, trying something new for a little while and then moving on. I think the longest campaigns I have ever played have never run for more than a year.
