My Current Game Setting – RPGaDay 2022

The question is: What situation is your character currently in?

As mentioned in the last post, I don’t have a current character. So, I thought I would repurpose this week’s questions to be about a game project, Divided Horizons.

So, the question is: What is your current game setting?

The elevator pitch for Divided Horizons is somewhere along the lines of: “In Earth’s rush to colonise the universe uses a technology that causes irreparable damage to space — find a solution or die trying because you can’t go home.

Humanity has come a long way and achieved all those things that make for a world of ascendent beige. All the world’s want, need and conflict has been erased, which is a good thing. And from the viewpoint of a setting, it’s usually that state of utopia that leads people to make dubious decisions.

Perfection is boring, right?

(No, it isn’t, but from a game setting perspective, let’s run with it)

One of the technological discoveries of the age is the Incision Drive, which offers the first opportunity to reach out for the stars at superluminal speeds. Those unsatisfied with a perfect world have the chance to find other planets. The opportunities are limited, so the process falls into the randomness of a lottery. And when a win comes around, one hundred lucky citizens of Earth pack up and ship out in deep sleep.

You are one of those lucky citizens.

But, as the elevator pitch suggests, all is not well. Over the years dozens upon dozens of ships blast into the void and when your turn comes around arrival in far space reveals a terrible truth. The Incision Drive technology has a side effect.

Why hasn’t this become obvious before now? Well, that’s because no one has been able to head home to warn anyone because to do so would be to put the Earth at risk of extinction.

Your only choice is to keep moving and hope that you can find a solution. Only then will you have the chance to go home and put an end to the threat.

This is a campaign to explore new worlds and uncover alien civilisations, knowing that each system you visit will be destroyed by your dumb-ass drive system.
